Job Description

The Professional is responsible for developing designs through various project stages, undertaking coordination, and carrying out design documentation while working as part of the project team. Perform specific and limited portions of a broader assignment as an experienced urban planner. Guides Graduate professionals, provides design guidance where necessary and works on detailed or routine project delivery assignments involving graphical representations of ideas, basic report writing, and data set calculations. The Urban Planner focuses effort and time on implementing strategies and adopting policies, standards, and methodologies to meet customer and business needs.

Technical Excellence:

  • Drive market and desktop research objectives and topics according to project briefs and office thought leadership topics. Streamline relevant research information and outputs for senior staff review. Able to steer online research promptly and more effectively.
  • Read, qualify, quantify, and graphically represent urban planning standards applicable to projects and apply the same to design tasks. Determine the correct source of planning and urban planning regulatory guidelines per region or authority and present key findings to senior urban planners and peers.
  • Fully develops the design content by applying design and technical knowledge to ensure the production of high-quality outputs by following project timelines.
  • Participates in the interdisciplinary reviews of project deliverables and works on detailed or routine assignments involving calculations, sketching, diagrams, dataset development, drawing and reports. Identifies discrepancies in results and proposes an approach to solving new problems encountered.
  • Performs work under the agreed-upon budget and schedule with moderate supervision. Coordinates with other disciplines or business lines, as applicable, to ensure the continuity of the design process.
  • Understand the impact of integrating the work of other internal disciplines or external consultants/stakeholders in the design sequence, as well as the output of the deliverables.
  • Adequately represent site reviews, opportunities, and constraints for project and client discussions. Question thoughts and validate design ideas after thoroughly reading the site's characteristics.
  • Present a good understanding of urban planning principles considering urban scale and hierarchy.
  • Propose relevant and applicable urban planning typologies for further review and discussions with senior planners.
  • Identify international and local benchmarks and precedents for further studies and steer the review effectively as per project requirements.
  • Requires the ability to structure urban planning deliverables and reports according to the scope of services and the applicable planning authorities' requirements.
  • Can demonstrate good descriptive writing of urban planning principles and urban planning guidelines.
  • Think in a 3-dimensional manner and be able to represent ideas verbally and graphically.
  • Acquire definitions of urban planning attributes used across urban planning projects.
  • Translate and represent innovative design solutions through digital tools and personal skills.
  • Identify new potential areas of innovation and improvement from which the urban planning team can benefit.
  • Actively participates in internal workshops and can put together summary outcome reports for internal and external distributions.



Team Contribution

  • Advocate for quality procedures applicable to the urban planning technical practice group and continuously apply thorough self-checks and reviews of deliverables before they are shared.
  • Report on safety issues observed in and outside the office during duty, including near misses.
  • Understand safety in design standards and procedures and be able to report on safety inside and outside the work environment and in the design process to senior staff.
  • Contribute to and participate in one of the U+P steering committees that promote integration, knowledge sharing, digital integration, or diversity and inclusion.
  • Observe and identify projects and staff collaboration matters and provide an impact assessment to senior staff for mitigations and management.
  • Enhance teamwork across the various offices and ensure experience and knowledge sharing between urban planners.
  • Ensure all graduate urban planners and other new urban planning recruits receive the required support needed to meet the expectations of the assigned tasks and integrate well with the other team members.



Client Relationship Management:

  • Begins to participate in client meetings to discuss project requirements, explain/defend work, and brief the team on requirements and outcomes.

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years post-undergraduate experience
  • Bachelors degree in the relevant discipline field.  Masters degree preferred.  Working towards professional membership in Urban Design or Architecture e.g. RIBA or equivalent in the relevant discipline degree.
